There is only one way singer-songwriter Alice Phoebe Lou could approach a career in music, independently and on her own terms. We spoke to her about her lyricism, why she's independent and how feeling insignificant is the ultimate freedom.

Your family moved from Somalia to Finland when you were 3 years old. What was it like growing up there?

Looking back at Somalia, I see poverty and war. So I feel lucky to be in a place that is safe. Where I grew up, we had people from different nationalities. It’s the sickest thing to be in a place with people from all over. You learn about other cultures, and foods you didn’t even know. I’m a people person who like those who are different from myself.

You have a lot of positive energy, where does it all come from?

My family. We are 10 children in my family and all of them are happy and positive people who joke and do silly things all the time. So I’ve grown up in a house with a lot of love and happiness. Even if we struggled with not having much, we were always happy.

" I'm loving what I do. It makes me feel free. "

Today, you’re working all over the world with top fashion clients. What do you think about your own future?

To be honest, I don’t think about the future so much. Even if I try to plan, I never know what’s going to happen. My life is so hectic right now and I could never have expected this. Modelling is like a dream job for me, especially the travelling. Right now, I’m living my best life and I’m loving what I do. It makes me feel free.

Lots of people focus on the things they want in the future like money. But one has to feel happy right now. Without worrying about the future.
