There is only one way singer-songwriter Alice Phoebe Lou could approach a career in music, independently and on her own terms. We spoke to her about her lyricism, why she's independent and how feeling insignificant is the ultimate freedom.

    What inspires your songwriting?

I try to connect to human subjects, emotions, problems and things that people go through. I feel like it’s important that people of different ages and backgrounds can relate to it. I take personal experiences, feelings and thoughts and make them universal, so it can be relatable for their own situations.

    What is freedom to you?

Freedom is being my own boss, being in control of my own life and my opportunities. As a young musician, it’s very easy to get wrapped up in other people’s agendas and what they think is best for you. But this is something I’ve always been very fierce about. To do it on my own terms. By being in control of my own life and career makes me feel like I’m steering the ship.

What is it like for you to be on stage?

For me it’s very important to perform as I am. I’m quite in touch with my own emotions so If I’m having a hard time, playing could be more melancholic, almost therapeutic. If I’m feeling very happy, the performance will be like a celebration and an expression of my happiness. I think there’s a sense that artists should put on a ‘performance face’ but I think audiences relate more when I’m earnest. It’s important to also feel sad and not pretend to be happy. I try to stay as honest and vulnerable as I can.

You’re originally from South Africa but now live in Berlin. How has this influenced you?

I’ve always lived in big cities and love being in a cultural melting pot like Berlin. The downside of it is that it can make you feel very lost, unindividual and insignificant. This can be both a sad and powerful feeling. I think a lot of people find this to be opposite of freedom. Like there is nothing they can do to make themselves feel less insignificant.

How do you relate to that feeling?

For me, I’ve come to the point where I feel that my insignificance is something that is quite powerful and liberating. Because it means that I’m free to do what I like. That there is no greater meaning and that there is no god for me. This way, I can use it, the life that I’ve been given and be free to enjoy it. I really don’t mind that I’m nothing.
