The Care Leather Suede Nubuck Textile

Leather is a durable natural material that ages beautifully over time. The material is known for its comfort and is very resistant to wear and tear due to its soft and supple composition. When designing our collections, we use different types of leather. Most of our footwear and accessories are in full-grain leather, foremost from cow hides but also pig, goat, or sheep. As members of the Leather Working Group (LWG), we support responsible leather manufacturing worldwide. All leather used in our collections derives from LWG-certified tanneries.

Different types of leather

SOFT LEATHER

Soft leather is a durable material with a long-lasting quality, recognized by its smooth, supple character. It’s amongst the most commonly used materials within footwear and accessories manufacturing. Taking good care of your pieces in soft leather will help prolong their lifespan and durability over time.

OILY LEATHER
Oily leather is a robust type of leather treated with an oil impregnation during the finishing process, resulting in a water-repelling material that can withstand moisture and wear & tear. The leather is defined by its sturdy, waxy finish, which needs to be treated with specific shoe care products to protect and maintain the material’s unique features.

How to care for your shoes in soft and oily leather

1. Clean your leather shoes
First, brush away surface dirt. Apply shoe cleaner with a damp cloth. Gently wipe off excess product and allow to dry.

2. Care for the leather upper
Apply a thin, even layer of shoe cream in a neutral, black, or suitable colour and allow to dry. Follow up by polishing the shoes with a shoe brush or polishing cloth.

For oily leather: swap the shoe cream to a neutral shoe wax to restore moisture and shine and allow it to dry before following up with other products.

3. Protect the upper
Apply protector spray across the upper and allow to dry before use. Reapply on occasion for ultimate protection.

Prolong the shoe’s lifespan
Add insoles to protect the shoe lining against odour and prolong the lifespan. Insert shoe trees in cedarwood between wearing, which helps absorb moisture and maintain the shoe’s shape
over time.

Different kinds of leather finishes

Some of our leather products are designed with different finishes that require specific care to maintain their characteristic look. Discover how to care for each material below.

POLISHED LEATHER
The leather is equipped with a fine topcoat for a highly polished appearance.

PATENT LEATHER
The leather has a thin, patent topcoat
that provides a characteristic, glossy look.

How to care for polished and patent leather
The materials are easily cared for and only require the use of a polishing cloth to retain the shiny finish, as products can leave stains or discolour the upper. To maintain the shoe’s overall shape, insert shoe trees in cedarwood between wearing. This helps to absorb moisture and prevent creasing.

BRUSH-OFF LEATHER
The material has a brush-off effect that gives each shoe a unique look. Start by cleaning the shoes with a shoe cleaner or a damp cloth. Then, moisturize the leather using a shoe cream or shoe wax in a neutral colour to maintain the worn-in finish. Follow up with a waterproof spray for ultimate protection against water, dirt, and stains.
